WOW! The past week has been a whirl-wind! We’ve operated on some, or all, of our “severe weather” detours since last Wednesday and we are just about back to normal service . . . WOO HOO! First we had to deal with snow, then downed power lines, branches and even trees, and then ice! Hopefully, we will resume regular service and it will stay that way for a while.
After the big 2008 snow storm (the first time we’ve chained-up the buses!), we created a Severe Weather Service Plan – and we actually got to give it a test this past week. The purpose was to have a plan in place that allowed us to provide as much service as possible to our community and still focus on keeping our riders and staff safe.
After everything settles down, we will conduct an internal “debrief” to talk about what went well and what we could improve. If you have any observations or suggestions – please leave a comment! We want to provide the best service possible.

I’d like to see some work towards clearing ice/snow piles on at least some of the major stops, possibly in coordination with city plow crews. Because of trample-down, ice at bus stops was often worse than on the approaching sidewalks, and on major streets, the snow plows had piled up substantial barriers as well, which then became treacherous to navigate when trying to get on the bus.
I think it’s great that IT is able to continue to run and always encourage people to ride the bus instead of driving. I would love to see anything done to ensure that the bus option is safer for more people!
Thanks for your comment! We will add this to our comments and see if there’s anything we can do to improve this in the future.
Yes… some of the bus stops were in bad shape. This was a very unusual situation, typically snow lasts about 24 hours around here! Unfortunately, we just didn’t have the staff available to get to the stops (we have almost 1,000) to clear them of ice and snow, in addition to keeping service on the streets. We will add your comment to our list and hopefully come up with a better solution for next time as safety is our number one priority. Thank you so much for sharing your concerns!
The bus stops were horrible. I fell trying to get out of the road where I was dropped off as the stop itself was impossible to use. I recently moved here from an area w/a much less impressive transit system and was very shocked that Intercity didn’t even address the bus stops during this weather mess.
Disappointed that my comment about this issue did not even get a reply from customer service when I contacted them via email
